TIMO LASSY
Timo Lassy plays the saxophone like he means it. Listen to him, and you hear someone fully dedicated to his art, no matter what the context. Despite being a fixture earlier on Downbeat Magazine polls for ”Rising Star” on the baritone saxophone section, he nowadays plays the tenor. That being said, on previous recordings he has also been heard on the flute, but to understand Lassy as an artist, his recent concentration on the tenor is a key thing. He goes deep.
For those paying attention to the jazz scene in Helsinki at the turn of the millennium, the chances are that you first heard him on the ranks of the Blue Note recording U-Street All Stars, or perhaps The Five Corners Quintet, the Nuspirit Helsinki led jazz project which morphed into a live band setting stages on fire the world over.
In 2007 Lassy released his debut album, ”The Soul & Jazz Of Timo Lassy”, on Helsinki’s lauded Ricky-Tick Records, the label also behind The Five Corners Quintet. The album, along with its lead single ”African Rumble”, quickly established Lassy a name to be reckoned with as a solo artist, especially among those with a taste for some latin-tinged soul jazz. It was essentially club music, featured on their sets and radio shows by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Paul Murphy, Jazzanova and Motor City Drum Ensemble, to mention but a few.
At the same time, it was clear from the get-go that Lassy doesn’t make ”just” club sounds. This wasn’t ”nujazz”, but the real deal with some of Finland’s top young guns circulating in and out of his band formations, and compositions that went way beyond their club functionality. The music is 3D, not tied to a specific era. Lassy’s setup was based around the music he loves and calls home: mid-60’s styled soul jazz with a touch of boogaloo sensibility. That is just the starting point, though.
More albums followed, the band took shape. José James featured on ”Round Two” (2009, Ricky-Tick Records). The Timo Lassy Band became a beyond solid live act, charming audiences and throwing them into a frenzy with their gritty gigs. Timo on tenor, Georgios Kontrafouris on piano/wurlitzer, Antti Lötjönen on double bass, Teppo Mäkynen on drums and Abdissa ”Mamba” Assefa on percussion. This is the ”classic lineup” that has sold out venues such as the 1.500 capacity Helsinki Festival tent ”Huvila” and Savoy Theatre in his hometown Helsinki, and trekked the world over.
After Ricky-Tick ceased operations, Lassy’s music was released by Italy’s Schema and Membran/MustHaveJazz based in Germany. His band formations started evolving. On the records, there’s an extended version of his working band (”Moves” Membran, 2019), big band work (”Timo Lassy & Ricy-Tick Big Band Brass” Membran, 2020) and a duo (”Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen” We Jazz Records, 2019 & 2021). He’s shuffling the deck to find new modes of expression.
A side note on awards: ”Moves” was awarded the ”Jazz Album of the Year” with the EMMA prize in Finland, the Finnish Jazz Federation awarded its main accolade ”Yrjö” to Lassy in 2020, and Gilles Peterson shortlisted ”Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen” for his Worldwide Awards ”Jazz Album of the Year” in 2020.
Meanwhile, the music is moving forward. Lassy, for some years now splitting his time between Helsinki and the more benign climate of Rovijn, Croatia, is on the lookout for new connections and inspirations. His tenor sound is readily recognisable from its robust quality and his often riff-like, catchy phrasing. But more often than before, you can hear him experiment with his music and playing, as well. There’s a new depth of expression constantly developing, and that goes for both his playing and composing.
At the time of writing, a new musical adventure is just around the corner. ”Trio” by Timo Lassy will be released on August 28, 2021, by We Jazz Records. The trio mentioned on the title is a new one, featuring Ville Herrala on double bass and Jaska Lukkarinen (of Dalindèo) on drums. Additionally, the album showcases a new sound for Lassy, bringing in electrronics and a large string section, suddenly making the album’s title something of an understatement.
But that’s the deal with Timo Lassy: You always get more than what you came for.
Timo Lassy soittaa saksofonia tunteella ja tyylillä. Kotimaiselle yleisölle tutuksi mm. Five Corners Quintetin riveistä tullut ilmaisuvoimainen artisti on jo aikaa sitten puhkaissut ”jazzpiirien” näkymättömät seinät ja astellut yhtyeineen lukuisille maamme halutuimmista esiintymislavoista. Juhlaviikkojen Huvila-teltan, Flow Festivalin ja Pori Jazzin kaltaiset lavat ovat tulleet tutuksi, kun Lassy on hurmannut yleisöjään Timo Lassy Bandin liiderinä ja yhdessä rumpali Teppo Mäkysen kanssa muodostamassa duokokoonpanossa.
Uusin Lassy-kokoonpanoista on Trio, jonka kanssa artisti aktivoitui ennen koko maailman ylle laskeutunutta keikkataukoa. Nyt livemusiikin taas palatessa kuulijoiden iloksi, on Lassyn, basisti Ville Herralan ja rumpali Jaska Lukkarisen muodostama trio täydessä iskussa ylistetty tuore levy plakkarissaan. Helsingin sanomat kehui We Jazz Recordsin elokuussa 2021 julkaiseman Trio-albumin viiden tähden arvoiseksi ja myös kansainvälinen media on ollut hereillä. Albumilla kuullaan varsinaisen trion ohella muhkeita jousisovituksia ja elektroniikkaa, joten koko soundimaailma kuvaa hyvin Lassyn jatkuvaa uudistumista taiteiljana.
Sekä Emma-palkinnon Vuoden jazzalbumista että kotimaisen jazzmuusiikin arvostetuimman palkinnoon Yrjön urallaan napannut Lassy on viime aikoina kasvattanut profiiliaan myös ulkomailla. Tästä osoitukseksi käy esimerkiksi se, että vaikutusvaltainen britti-DJ Gilles Peterson nosti Lassyn ja Mäkysen duoalbumin yhdeksi vuoden parhaista Worldwide Awards -gaalassaan 2019, ja vuotta aiemmin miehen Moves-levy sai saman kunniamaininnan.
Timo Lassyn musiikki on samanaikaisesti taiteellisesti laadukasta ja laajaan yleisöön vetoavaa. Kun karismaattinen tenorisaksofonisti astuu lavalle, ennakkovalmisteluja ei yleisön puolelta edellytetä. Lassy ottaa lavan haltuun, oli kyseessä sitten mikä tahansa hänen kokoonpanoistaan. Miehen musiikki juurtuu vahvasti 1960-luvulta alkaneeseen soul jazzin jatkumoon, mutta se on vasta lähtökohta. Se, mihin musiikki versoo, on jo toinen asia. Tuloksena on hetkessä elävää nykyjazzia parhaasta päästä.
Timo Lassy Band on jo vuosien varrella vakiintunut kvintetti, jossa mukana ovat urkuri-pianisti Georgios Kontrafouris, basisti Antti Lötjönen, rumpali Teppo Mäkynen ja perkussionisti Abdissa Assefa. Kyseessä on Lassyn läpilyöntiyhtye sooloartistina, monissa liemissä marinoitu kansainvälisen tason bändi, jonka voi heittää lavalle missä vain. Yhtyettä on studio-olosuhteissa kuultu viimeksi Emma-palkitulla levyllä Moves (Membran / MustHaveJazz, 2019).
Uusi triokin on tuoreudestaan huolimatta kannuksensa ansainnut. Sekä Ville Herrala että Jaska Lukkarinen ovat soittaneet välillä myös Timo Lassy Bandin riveissä ja he ovat muutenkin tuttuja soittokumppaneita fonistille.
Tässä on yksi avain Lassyn menestyksekkäiden yhtyeiden ja hänen koko artistinuransa ytimeen: kaikki tehdään kunnolla. Bändit ovat tip top -iskussa saapuessaan kiertueelle, levyt on huolella suunniteltu ja tuotettu, paketti on kasassa. Tältä pohjalta on mahdollista rakentaa uraa, joka on nostanut Timo Lassyn 2000-luvun suurimmaksi tähdeksi kotimaisen jazzin saralla.
Jazzmusiikille tyypillisesti taiteen uudistuminen ei ole hetkittäistä vaan kokonaisvaltaista. Tämä prosessi jatkuu Lassyn kohdalla joka kerta hänen noustessaan lavalle. Kelle Lassyn musiikkia sitten voisi suositella? Kaikille. Perustelu: musiikki ottaa kuulijan mukaansa, vetää maailmaansa ja pitää otteessaan. Varsinkin jazzia vaikeana hifistelynä pitävien genreskeptikkojen olisi syytä kuunnella Timo Lassyn musiikkia, mielellään livenä.
Ainoa vaikeus Timo Lassyn musiikissa on nimittäin se, miten mahdotonta siitä olisi olla innostumatta. Kun Timo soittaa saksofonia, musiikki on totta.
